Wildcard Book Club – November

Join us for a relaxed chat about a different book every month! The wildcard book club is about breaking out of your reading comfort zone and trying something new every month. It could be biography, it could be a graphic novel, it could be anything!

This month’s book is: Leviathan by Philip Hoare, in our opinion one of the greatest pieces of modern nature writing we’ve ever come across.

The story of a man’s obsession with whales, which takes him on a personal, historical and biographical journey – from his childhood to his fascination with Moby-Dick and his excursions whale-watching. All his life, Philip Hoare has been obsessed by whales, from the gigantic skeletons in London’s Natural History Museum to adult encounters with the wild animals themselves. Whales have a mythical quality – they seem to elide with dark fantasies of sea-serpents and antediluvian monsters that swim in our collective unconscious.

How long does each book club last?

Each book club is an hour and a half, ending around 8.30pm.

Does the discount have to be used against the book club title?

No! If it’s a book you already own, you can use your discount on any other book in the shop. Simply pop in with your proof of purchase and we can sort that for you.

Do I have to finish reading the book before coming along?

Ideally, but no! If you can’t, or don’t want to, finish the book, we still want to hear your thoughts. We will however spoil every aspect of the book during discussion.
